I know what a full house looks like and I’ve heard of Dave Ulliot ‘’Devil Fish’’. I guess that’s because I am from the UK and watched a random episode on TV back in the late 90s called: Late Night Poker. It was a time when poker when mainstream and every Tom, Dick and Harry thought they could win the World Series of Poker if they learned the basics. I watched but didn’t really learn. Perhaps that was a good thing. I’ve never been lucky at cards and three card brag has been a thorn in my side. Every Boxing Day we’d venture round out cousins and the amount of times I cam back potless wasn’t good. As with all losses, you learn something along the way. But if poker could teach you 5 lessons in life what would they be?

1) Discipline

You know there’s a reason why the army teaches you to think and act in a certain way. I’m surprised they don’t teach new recruits how to play poker. So what does poker teach us? You can’t win every hand! It’s a basic but a certainty which helps us understand something quite profound. At any time things change. You could have the best hand only to be bluffed out of your winnings. But the best players use discipline to keep on the straight and narrow. Without that, you are like a leaf blowing in the wind.

2) Bankroll Management

Without good bankroll management you will undermine your play. It often happens to new players who have some success and push too hard against more seasoned players. They soon find their lack of skills point them out as a weak link and loser. You shouldn’t play with money you can’t afford to lose or over bet the money you take to the table. If you don’t have some understanding of bankroll you are likely to be out of sync to the game and it will only lead to you going home early.

3) Risk Reward

Another concept which most non gamblers fail to understand and ultimately based on skill. You know, the best players don’t simply wait for the best hands to make their money. Patience give you an opportunity to make the most of your chance when it arrives. Basically, you need the odds stacked in your favour.

5) Decision Making

As we detailed above. Without good decision making you are doomed playing poker or in life. You cannot change the cards you are given but how you play them is your choice. To maximise your chance of winning you need to make the most of every hand. As with life, make the best of uncertainty with good decisions to maximise gains.

As a decent poker player, you’re wish would be to sit at a table of recreational players. While a table full of pros and sharks would be a different story unless you know better. Like life, you have the option of picking your path and the games you play. These factors are important to having a decent career, business and happy life.

A good player can’t be afraid of a bad loss. They are dealing with odds to chance and they can change at any time. However, strength of mind keeps players focused and determined that long term their skill will show a profit. Life can be difficult but do you give up or carry on? Tommy Carmichael was busted slot cheating twice in Las Vegas and once in Atlantic City. Before being apprehended, he also admits to defrauding hundreds of other casinos.

Carmichael was the brains behind a worldwide slot machine theft network that netted thousands of dollars from casinos.

The largest slot machine scam in history

Carmichael became immediately captivated and made the decision to abandon everything he knew and move to Las Vegas to visit this top-bottom location. He first tried it on a five-cent slot machine at a casino on the Las Vegas Strip, where he won more than $35 in nickels. He used this technique on other slot machines all weekend, feeling unstoppable, and won a sizable sum of money.

When five police officers barged into the adjoining Denny’s where Carmichael was having a mid-afternoon coffee break, they were pursuing him. He claimed to have used the top-bottom joint—which they found—as a tool to start his car. Due to his drug use and criminal background, Carmichael received a five-year prison term for this cheating episode.

Released from prison

Bally and International Game Technology unveiled a video slot machine using microprocessors and random number generation software after Carmichael was imprisoned. Carmichael had to start over because it was now difficult for him to cheat in the same way he had in the past.

Carmichael took on a few part-time jobs to supplement his income before going to Las Vegas and purchasing a video poker machine. He created and produced The Monkey Paw over more than a year.

The micro switch on this spring steel and guitar wire contraption could be activated by inserting it into the payout chute, which would cause the bucket of quarters to start paying out roughly $1,000 every hour. Unfortunately for Carmichael, advancements in slot machine technology rendered the monkey claw less helpful.

He traveled to the Las Vegas showroom and pretended to be a client who wanted to examine a machine’s interior to see whether he could still rig it. In a handful of days after buying one of the machines, Carmichael produced The Light Wand. The payout chute’s sensor would be blinded by the light’s intense brightness, prompting the machine to dispense cash.

By 1992, the device was successfully hacking slot machines across the world, and Carmichael was swiftly making thousands of dollars by distributing it to other slot machine scammers in the industry. Mostly in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, Carmichael himself performed almost daily. Nevertheless, he did not limit himself to the US. Carmichael and Balsamo traveled to the Caribbean seven times in six months in 1995, taking advantage of the onboard casinos to make thousands of dollars every day.

Balsamo finally linked Ramon David Pereira and Carmichael together, forming a close-knit group of professional cheaters. It didn’t take them long to start making huge amounts of money every day after they scouted a lot of other scammers who had been active in the industry for years.

Tommy Carmichael fixed slots for nearly 40 years to scam Las Vegas casinos out of millions of dollars. He started in the television repair industry and worked his way up to mastering the engineering of slot machines to win large. His skills gave him access to several cheating methods that guaranteed him big quick wins.

With time, slot machine technology progressed, and Tommy had to follow suit. He even visited other casino cheats who cheated the establishments out of millions of dollars.

Like most cheaters, they are always detected, and Tommy’s bad luck ran out when he was apprehended and sentenced to time in jail.

The Beginning

Even as a young child, Tommy was intrigued by the hows and whys of technology, which is possibly why he decided to open a television supply and repair shop in the 1980s.

As a young kid, Tommy Carmichael was intrigued by technology and how it worked. He had every reason to think that he should start his television repair service in the 1980s. The Oklahoma-based business was successful, and as a result, the competition increased.

Tommy’s life was disintegrating around him due to a failed business, performing volunteerism for drug crimes, and going through his third divorce, yet he persisted.

Tommy amassed tremendous winnings for years, but casinos became aware of such cheating devices as Tommy’s and updated their game technology with RNGs, which are still used today. Tommy had to turn to smaller casinos since he was unable to keep winning at the larger ones. But without the big individuals, he and his activity were noticeable. He was captured after a week-long police chase with the equipment in his custody.

The subsequent years

The new video slots were much too sophisticated for Tommy’s old strategies when he was freed from prison, so he utilized the time-saving funds and labor he had saved to purchase a video slot, deconstruct it, and make a new tool. He was victorious, and he once more started to win thousands of dollars every night.

But as technology developed, Tommy was compelled to pretend to be a casino owner trying to buy a new slot machine. The owner consented to let Tommy open the slot and explain its workings. Tommy then went about making and selling tools for getting around the slots.

He then joined forces with seasoned gambling con artists and hit Vegas and Atlantic City, robbing casinos of huge amounts of money every day until he was once more caught on camera. After just under a year in prison, he put his skills to good use by working with gaming companies to create an anti-cheating device.

Carmichael spent nearly two decades creating the tools he used to loot casino machines around the United States and the Caribbean, including the kickstand, monkey paw, and light wand.

He conned the casino security with the same ease as he conned the machines. As mysterious as a triple seven, he was.

guilty of slot fraud Carmichael is referred to as “a legend” by Jerry Criner. “When it comes to creating cheating tools, he has the best inventiveness.”

The adjective is undisputed by the police.

During the 1980s

It’s 1980. Carmichael, 30, is sitting at his Tulsa television repair business, Ace TV Sales and Repair, when he is interrupted by an old acquaintance named Ray Ming who is now living in Las Vegas. Carmichael received a gift from Ming.

In his trunk, Ming kept a “top-bottom joint,” the pinnacle of cheating devices 20 years ago, along with a Bally’s slot machine.

We began playing around, Carmichael said. I could see that it was quite easy.

Carmichael had recognized his aptitude for deceit.

He decided to close the repair shop straight away. Carmichael, a native of Tulsa who resembled a young Johnny Cash and had thick brown hair, succumbed to the pull of Las Vegas. He went to Sin City with his fourth wife.

He started by stealing a 5-cent slot machine close to the Las Vegas Strip and made a brash exit while carrying $35 worth of nickels in his pockets.

He said, “You think you’re going to have automobiles and boats.” “You know, the American Dream.”

Getting Caught at Last

The group had been at the peak of its popularity for more than four years before Tommy and his fellow members traveled to the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas at the end of 1996.

Tommy’s new unidentified surveillance cameras can see beyond crooks who hide from other cameras.

Security personnel ran towards Tommy and caught him after he used a Light Wand gadget to activate the machine.

Tommy was found guilty of employing, possessing, and removing cheating technology this time. Tommy was released less than 24 hours after being arrested because the evidence was insufficient to keep him locked up for much longer.
